Gibborim Ministry
Gibborim is the name of our flags and tambourine ministry. Why Gibborim? This ministry was started by Susan and Violet, who were excellent partners in the children’s worship ministry for years. Before Susan left us for her doctoral studies, God impressed upon her the need to have a name for the ministry. With the idea of raising a team of worship warriors for the Lord, Susan ploughed through 200 Greek and 200 Hebrew words. The result: Gibborim.
Pronunciation: gih bohr EEM Meaning : Mighty Men Taken from Holman Treasury of Key Bible Words by Eugene E. Carpenter and Philip W.Comfort. |
On 3rdAugust 2009, Susan shared with her pioneer worship warriors, a team of mature youth and older children, her hopes for Gibborim:
“From the beginning of the ministry, we have all been striving to be mighty men and women of God, slaying and thwarting satan's plan and putting him down under our feet. The perseverance each of us displayed in the training is also a trademark of warriors. 2 Samuel 23:8-22 tells us of Josheb-Basshebeth, a mighty man of the Lord, who killed 800 men in one encounter. The word Gibborim has been used to describe God Himself as mighty and awesome (Deut 10:17). The writer of Hebrews also spoke of outstanding people of God in the Old Testament who, despite their weaknesses, were able to put to flight many enemies of Israel (Heb 11:32-35). Isn't this what we have been emphasizing? We are all weak at some point, in some areas, at some times, but God is the one who strengthens us and enables us, because we put our faith in Him. In the Day of Judgment, even mighty men will not be able to save their own lives (Amos 2:14). This reminds us that no matter how good we think we are, or have become, there is no way we can save ourselves. The only way is still to trust in Him alone. It is also a good reminder to those leading the ministry that, no matter how mighty a warrior you seem to be in the ministry, you still have to depend on God, not only in the “Day of Judgment", but from this day onwards. Let the ministry take flight in this direction!”
Susan passed on the baton to a core team of successors: Violet, Lois, Janice, Angeline, Nicole, Benedict and Jessamae. Committed and well-trained, these leaders have gone on to train as many as 17 youth and children in the proper use of the worship tools of flags and tambourine, emphasizing both the devotional life and spiritual growth of the members. They also took over the training of a group of ladies on Wednesday night, a vibrant tambourine ministry that is now wonderfully led by Trina and Cheryl. Since the beginning of the ministry, none of those trained by the core team has left the ministry, but all of them have continued to be available for ministry at our evangelistic outreaches and worship meetings. The core team takes the lead in our monthly corporate worship sessions at Agape. With their flags, tambourines and streamers, they encourage Agape members to worship at higher heights. The core team understands that these tools are powerful in spiritual warfare. When Agape holds evangelistic meetings, the core team enters the venues before the doors open to the public, to prepare the place spiritually. They have remained committed to the original ideals of the founders of the ministry.
